Help Hanover Park Kids Learn and Grow — ECD Programme

Picture a child walking into a museum for the very first time — eyes wide, shoulders back, realising that this space is for them too. That moment of possibility is exactly what your donation creates.
At Dr. Phil-Afel Foundation, we run an Early Childhood Development programme in Hanover Park, Cape Town and we are asking for your support to grow it. Everything we do is funded entirely through donations and sponsorships. No government funding. Just people who believe that the children of Hanover Park deserve a strong start in life.
Fundraising Goal: R75,000
Every rand goes directly to the children
Why the Early Years Matter
Between the ages of 2 and 10, children build the foundations that shape the rest of their lives. Language skills. Confidence. Emotional regulation. A love of learning. These are not abstract ideas, they are the building blocks that determine whether a child thrives in school, how they handle setbacks, and what they believe is possible for their future.
Children in under-resourced communities who do not receive structured early support often arrive at school already behind their peers. That gap is hard to close once it has formed. The good news is that it is entirely preventable and that is exactly what this programme is designed to do.
The earlier we invest in a child, the greater the return — not just for that one child, but for the whole community around them.
What We Do
Our programme supports children aged 2 to 10 through both learning experiences and real-world exposure. This includes monthly educational outings that introduce children to new environments and opportunities, as well as structured weekly learning sessions designed to support their development. Together, these activities help nurture curiosity, confidence, and a strong foundation for the future.
Monthly Educational Outings — Ongoing
Every month we take children from Hanover Park on a purposeful educational outing, and no two trips look the same. We have taken children to museums, science centres, nature reserves, art galleries, historical sites, cultural spaces, farms, marine environments, libraries, theatres, and more. Every destination is chosen with learning and exposure in mind.
We cover everything: transport from Hanover Park, food for every child, and entry fees where needed. For many of these children, these outings are their first time experiencing places like these — their first time standing somewhere extraordinary and realising that the world is far bigger, more interesting, and more available to them than they may have been shown.
These outings are funded entirely through donations and sponsorships, and they happen because people like you make them possible.
Weekly Learning Sessions — Our Main Goal (Currently Paused)
We previously ran structured weekly sessions covering reading and literacy, numeracy, life skills, and emotional development, led by trained community-based facilitators. Due to a funding gap, these sessions are currently on pause. Restarting them is the primary goal of this campaign.
When running, the programme reaches 15 to 30 children every single week. The impact of consistent, structured early learning at this age is profound — and it is something many of these children cannot access anywhere else.
To bring the weekly programme back, we need to cover: facilitator fees, learning materials and workbooks, healthy snacks at every session, and classroom equipment and resources.
