Backing Zacri's Dream of Becoming a Chef

Dr. Phil-Afel Foundation • January 28, 2026

Zacri is a bright, respectful, and hardworking young man from Hanover Park, Cape Town. He has been actively involved in programmes run by Dr. Phil-Afel Foundation, where he has consistently demonstrated commitment, responsibility, and genuine care for the people around him. He shows up week after week, not because he has to, but because he understands the value of community and the importance of building something for himself.

In 2026, Zacri is completing his matric at Wellington School of Skills - a specialised institution focused on practical, hands-on, skills-based learning. It is exactly the right environment for someone like Zacri, who has always learned best by doing.

His dream is specific and grounded: to become a professional chef. Wellington School of Skills is the first step on that path and 2026 is the year that makes it real.

By supporting Zacri, you are not just covering a school fee. You are investing in a young person who has already shown exactly who he is  and who he intends to become.

The Challenge

Zacri lives with his mother, grandmother, and siblings. His family is currently facing significant financial hardship, and covering school-related costs for his matric year has placed real strain on the household.

On top of current year expenses, there are outstanding school fees from the previous year that still need to be settled. This dual pressure, past and present costs stacking up at the same time, is the obstacle between Zacri and the year that changes his life.

Zacri cannot control the financial pressures his family faces. But he can control how he shows up. And every week, without fail, he does.

This campaign is about making sure that what is outside his control does not undo what he has built.

Exactly Where Your Money Goes

Every rand raised through this campaign goes directly to Zacri's education-related costs. Nothing else. Here is the full breakdown:

School and Hostel Fees

School fees: R2,000

Hostel fees: R3,500

Outstanding fees from the prior school year: included in the R20,000 goal

School Uniform

Zacri needs the following items to attend school:

Rain jacket  |  Pullover  |  Jersey  |  Tracksuit  |  Tie  |  Scarf  |  Cap

Transport

Transport to and from school: R350 per month

Total goal: R20,000. Transparent. Fully costed. Every single rand goes directly to Zacri's schooling.

Why Wellington School of Skills?

Wellington School of Skills focuses on practical, hands-on learning alongside academic development. This environment supports Zacri's strengths and aligns with his passion for working with food and developing culinary skills.

For Zacri, this is not just a place to earn a matric certificate. It is a bridge to the culinary career he has been working toward. The curriculum is built around the kind of hands-on, applied learning that matches how he learns best — and completing his matric here gives him the foundation he needs to take the next step.

Why This Matters Beyond Zacri

When a young person from an under-resourced community completes matric, the impact does not stop with them. It ripples outward - to siblings watching to see what is possible, to peers measuring their own potential, to a community that takes quiet note every time one of its own succeeds.

Zacri's success is proof that consistency pays off. That showing up matters. That with the right support at the right moment, the future does not have to look like the past.

When you back Zacri, you are backing everyone watching him.
